About Deaf-Blindness
Although the world is full of suffering,it is also full of the overcoming of it. -Helen Keller
Imagine for a moment what your life might be like if you could not see.
Imagine moving around your home or office, preparing meals, getting dressed, food shopping, reading a birthday card from a loved one. Now imagine that you also could not hear - visiting with friends, participating in your favorite hobby, answering the door or phone, attending school, finding a job.
For people with deaf-blindness, life can be extremely isolating. It can be lonely and frightening to magnitudes that people who can see and hear can't possibly imagine. To do so, one would have to create an entirely new frame of reference for everything they know. So much of daily life in the hearing and seeing world depends on these two senses, the loss of which is accompanied by another, most treasured sense - the sense of independence.
Deaf-blindness poses exceptional challenges to everyday life, both physically and emotionally. However, with the proper support, people with deaf-blindness can live life to its fullest potential, complete with possibilities, aspirations, and the satisfaction of achieving one's dreams.
